Well, I am happy to report not only that Paidan has been an angel all day, but I am writing now in completely blissful silence, which means in the war of Paidan vs. The Loss Principle, the Loss Principle gained some ground last night. It was an awful night all around and neither boy got to sleep before 11 p.m. Paidan ended up losing everything, including his mattress, slept on the floor and there was much screaming and crying and gnashing of teeth, but by morning, my sweet little boy emerged from his bedroom a little bit wiser.
Although I am proud of myself for holding my own and not giving in to his truly spectacular display of the full tantrum potential of a four year old, I truly hope that we don’t need to endure this ordeal again because it’s extremely draining on all involved and I end up feeling like one guilty mamma. But even if we do, I don’t think this consequence will become routine. Paidan is a smart boy and, even more than that, he likes to be happy and comfortable in his own little world (as do we all) and now that he fully understands what he needs to do to stay that way, I don’t believe it will take much more convincing.
I must say, I have found some amusement in Paidan’s bringing the situation up throughout the day today, first explaining it to my husband this morning, then to my mom this evening on the phone, as well as reminding me of the new consequences every so often all day long, all the while making sure I know exactly what needs to happen when he gets out of his bed at night (you’d think he would want me to forget)! He really seems to get it this time, so we’ll see how long it lasts. In the meantime, I intend to fully enjoy the peace and quiet while I can!
In other news, Blake is still pitching a fit over me wanting to cut Liam’s hair (he wants to wait until March 18th, his first birthday, so he can hold on to his babyness a little longer), so only Paidan’s locks were trimmed today. After letting it shag out a little, we have found that the amazingly enormous cowlick that covers almost his entire head actually CAN lay down when his hair is a little longer, so I didn’t take much off the top. It was really my first attempt at a “longer” boy’s hair style and I think I “did a pretty good job”, if I do say so myself. That being said, he’s such a stud, I could probably shave his hair clean off and he’d still be darling.
Liam is back to having a goopey pink eye (on the right side), which means I didn’t push the antibiotics long enough, so we’re back to eye drops three times a day and hand sanitizer every 5 minutes, which I can tell you is less than fun with an 11 month old (he’s pretty good about the sanitizer, it’s the eye drops we have to hold him down for). I haven’t been to church in almost a month because our boys keep getting these contagions (regular little petri dishes they are) and I was really hoping to be able to return this week, so if Blake isn’t teaching in Young Men’s, I may make him stay home for a change!
All in all, we had a much better day today than we did yesterday and, here’s hoping, we might have an even better day tomorrow. :)
